- Isomerase
In
biochemistry , an isomerase is anenzyme that catalyses the structural rearrangement ofisomer s. Isomerases thus catalyze reactions of the form:A → B
Nomenclature
The names of isomerases are formed as "substrate" isomerase" (for example,
enoyl CoA isomerase ), or as "substrate" "type of isomerase" (for example,phosphoglucomutase ).Classification
Isomerases have their own EC classification of enzymes: EC 5. Isomerases can be further classified into six subclasses:
* includes enzymes that catalyzeracemization (racemase s) andepimer ization (epimerase s)
* includes enzymes that catalyze the isomerization of geometric isomers (cis-trans isomerase s)
* includesintramolecular oxidoreductase s
* includes intramoleculartransferase s (mutase s)
* includes intramolecularlyase s
* includes other isomerases (includingtopoisomerase s)References
