She swam for her native country at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics.
At 15 years of age she won three gold medals at the 1972 Olympic Games; in the 100m backstroke Belote defeated her American teammate and record holder Susan Atwood. In the 200m Backstroke, Belote set a World Record (2:19.19).
She retired from the sport in 1979. Four years later she was inducted in the International Swimming Hall of Fame.[1]
She currently coaches swim and dive at McClintock High School in Tempe, AZ and coaches for Rio Salado Swim Team. Her assistant coach is Caleb Stodghill. Her favorite swimmers are Ashley Grijalva, Cameron Clark, Nick Quon, and Zoe Vela.
