Victoria the White Cat

Victoria the White Cat

Victoria is the white cat from the musical "Cats". Her coat is completely white (although in some versions the tips of her ears are black, and she has brownish-copper stripes on her sides.) She was named after T. S. Eliot's favorite queen, Queen Victoria. As this is a very demanding role, requiring extensive ballet training, the actor enacting the character of Victoria should be very flexible.

Fictional character biography

This is probably her first time at the Jellicle Ball. Victoria is most known for her solo dance during the Invitation to the Jellicle Ball. She is also is the first cat to actually touch Grizabella in a friendly manner. This is initially not encouraged by the others as Grizabella is not a favored cat among the group. Victoria also dances with Plato during the ball. She is also seen many times with Mr. Mistoffelees as they are close friends. Victoria is one of the many female cats who swoons over Rum Tum Tugger.

She stands out among all of the other cats, some that are calico, striped and black yet Victoria is the only white cat in the entire junkyard. She is one of the lead dancers for the performance. She rarely sings. At the end of the story, after Victoria's close friend Jemima tells Grizabella there is still hope, Victoria again reaches out. This overture to Grizabella is accepted by the other cats.

Victoria is seen mostly with Jemima, Electra and Etcetera.

Players

The role of Victoria was originated by Finola Hughes in London West End and by Cynthia Onrubia on Broadway. Phyllida Crowley Smith played her in the 1998 filmed version. Sandra Kater, wife of RTE television presenter Bryan Smyth, played Victoria for over fifteen hundred performances at the New London Theatre in London's West End.
