The tour was the first "Test" status tour after the First World War. It followed tours by the Australian Imperial Forces cricket team tour which played a number first-class matches in England, South Africa and Australia immediately after the war. The previous Ashes series was the 1912 Triangular Tournament held in England that year.

It was the first Ashes series in which one side won all the matches. The feat has been repeated only once subsequently: by Australia in the 2006-07 series.
