He currently co-anchors "Ten News at Five" in Sydney, alongside Deborah Knight. He has worked at TEN-10 Sydney for almost 30 years.

Early life

Wilson was born in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland and emigrated to Australia with his family when he was a young child. He spent much of his childhood in Victoria where he picked up the nickname Rondog and completed a law degree in Darwin, Northern Territory. When Cyclone Tracy destroyed Darwin in 1974, Ron was on scene as a reporter for a local telelvision station. Career

Wilson worked as a newsreader on "Good Morning Australia" from 1982-91, alongside Kerri-Anne Kennerly, Tim Webster, Sue Kellaway, Gordon Elliot, Terry Willesee and Mike Gibson. During that time, he also presented Ten Sydney's weekend newscasts (variously called "Ten Eyewitness News", "Ten News", "Eyewitness News" and "Ten Evening News"). In 1992 Wilson took the helm of "Good Morning Australia" as co-anchor with Sandra Sully. A year later the pair moved from dawn to dusk, co-anchoring TEN-10's 5:00pm newscast and marking Wilson's debut as regular anchor of a weeknight bulletin. In 1994 Wilson was joined at the Sydney newsdesk by Juanita Phillips and, 2 years later, by Jessica Rowe in a partnership that lasted 10 years. He also co-anchored NEW-10 Perth's 5:00pm news (broadcast from TEN-10's studios) from 2003 to 2005.

Wilson has reported or anchored live from the scene of some of Sydney's biggest news events. When an Ansett Australia Boeing 747 crashed at Sydney Airport on 19 October 1994, Wilson anchored "Ten News" live from the scene, next to the runway, and was the only Sydney newsanchor to broadcast from the airport that night. He also anchored live from the scene of most of Sydney's major bushfires of the last 15 years.

Wilson anchored live non-stop news coverage of the start of Gulf War 1 on 17 January 1991 (AEDT) on Ten from mid-morning until 6:00pm. On 20 March 2003, Wilson anchored live mid-afternoon coverage of the first US strikes against Baghdad marking the commencement of the War in Iraq.

Wilson has joked that "everyone has had a read with Ron". Co-anchors have included Anne Fulwood, Sandra Sully, Katrina Lee, Juanita Phillips, Deborah Knight, Jessica Rowe, Natarsha Belling, Tracey Spicer, Charmaine Dragun, Celina Edmonds, Claudia Emery, Margaret Bates, Geraldine Doogue and Ann Sanders.

In the period between 1975 and 1979, Wilson worked for a number of radio stations including 2WL, 2SM and 2UE. He also worked at Sydney radio station Mix 106.5 for several years in the early 2000s as newsreader on the breakfast show. He resigned from Mix 106.5 in 2006. Wilson replaced the outgoing Rowan Barker as Macquarie National News newsreader on 30 June 2008.
