Nephelobates is a genus of poison dart frogs native to South America. This genus is relatively new (1994), created from the former Colostethus alboguttatus group.
A recent review proposed that Nephelobates is paraphyletic and should be invalidated, meaning that the included species belong in different taxonomic groups.
Taxonomy
Nephelobates contains eight species which used to be classified in the Colostethus genus. These are:
- Nephelobates alboguttatus (Boulenger, 1903)
- Nephelobates duranti (Péfaur, 1985)
- Nephelobates haydeeae (Rivero, 1978)
- Nephelobates mayorgai (Rivero, 1980)
- Nephelobates meridensis (Dole and Durant, 1973)
- Nephelobates molinarii (La Marca, 1985)
- Nephelobates orostoma (Rivero, 1978)
- Nephelobates serranus (Péfaur, 1985)
