nihongo|Akita International University|国際教養大学|Kokusai Kyōyō Daigaku, or AIU, is a public university located in Akita City, Akita Prefecture, Japan. Established in 2004 and modeled on American liberal arts colleges, AIU is one of the few universities in Japan offering all of its courses in English.

Academics

Distinguishing features

Akita International University (AIU) first opened its doors in April 2004. Already, we rank among the top universities in Japan, according to a number of influential surveys.

We are a small, liberal arts college, with a global orientation, located in beautiful Akita Prefecture on the northern Japanese seaboard. Except for our Japanese language courses for international students, all courses at AIU are taught in English and every AIU student is required to study abroad for a period of at least one year. Our Japanese students have entered our university through a severely competitive selection process, and come from all over Japan - from Hokkaido to Okinawa. Members of our faculty come from the world's top institutions and have rich, international teaching and research experience. Many of us have had exceptional professional success in our respective fields.

We are dedicated to helping our students to become leaders among world citizens through rigorous academic training, the development of practical skills in English, and attainment of a deep awareness of global issues. The supply of young people with this set of skills and background is lacking among college graduates in Japan. However, the demand for such young people is quite substantial and increasing.

The achievement of world harmony requires broad minds and multilingual skills. Each nation needs a citizenry that is highly energized and motivated, and whose global vision allows that nation to assume a harmonious, active role in the world community. Such needs are keenly felt in Japan. It is Akita International University's principal mission to prepare our students for an important role on the international stage by providing them with high levels of proficiency in languages, deep intercultural understanding, and a commitment to community and public service.

As president of AIU, I promise to devote myself to the achievement of these lofty goals. We are proud that AIU is recognized as unique among universities in Japan and that it is a place where 'new approaches to global higher education begin.' We invite you to join the many excellent international students who come from all over the world to study at our campus, in the midst of the famous, beautiful cedar forests of Akita.

President's Message- Mineo Nakajima, Ph.D.
