Franklin is a city in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. Franklin is a suburb of Milwaukee with a population of 29,494 as of the 2000 census.

Franklin is nine miles (14 km) from downtown Milwaukee and four miles (6 km) from General Mitchell International Airport, close to Interstate 94. Running through the city are U.S. Highway 45, and WIS 36, WIS 100, and WIS 241.

In July 2007, [http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2007/moneymag/0707/gallery.BPTL_top_100.moneymag/90.html CNN/Money and "Money" magazine] ranked Franklin #90 in its annual best places to live in the United States survey.

FDi magazine honored Franklin in their [http://gdi-solutions.org/fdi/2007awards/USA/franklin.htm April 2007 issue] with awards for "Best Human Resources Runner-up", as well as "Best Infrastructure Top Five" for Micro Cities in the North American region.

Geography

Franklin is located at coor dms|42|53|57|N|88|0|8|W|city (42.899166, -88.002204)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 34.7 square miles (89.9 km²), of which, 34.6 square miles (89.7 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (0.26%) is water.

The Root River runs south through Franklin, cutting the city in half.

Demographics

The Department of Administration estimates that the population for the City of Franklin in 2005 was 32,548. Since 2000, the population of Franklin has grown approximately 10 percent. Franklin is one of the fastest growing communities in the state of Wisconsin, and by 2010, Franklin is predicted to have a population close to 40,000. Franklin has an estimated 35% of land still available for development (residential/commercial/office).As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 29,494 people, 10,602 households, and 7,697 families residing in the city. The population density was 851.8 people per square mile (328.8/km²). There were 10,936 housing units at an average density of 315.8/sq mi (121.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 90.78% White, 5.15% African American, 0.36% Native American, 2.10% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.64% of the population.

There were 10,602 households out of which 33.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.4% were non-families. 22.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58, and the average family size was 3.06.

In the city, the population was spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 32.7% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 109.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 110.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was US$64,315, and the median income for a family was $75,532. Males had a median income of $47,827 versus $33,737 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,474. About 1.4% of families and 2.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.7% of those under age 18 and 3.9% of those age 65 or over.
