Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge

Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge

Opened in the Spring of 2006, the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge is a wetlands area 15 miles Southwest of Portland, Oregon, between the suburbs of Tualatin and Sherwood. It is about 6,400 acres in size and one of 10 “urban” refuges in the USFWS.

Tualatin River Refuge was established as an urban refuge to provide wetland, riparian, and upland habitats for a variety of migratory birds, threatened and endangered species, fish, other resident wildlife, and for the enjoyment of people.

A Visitor's Center is currently under construction and should be open by spring of 2007. Wildlife interpretive trails are open to the public at this time and wayside interpretive exhibits are also under construction.

Habitats consist of emergent, shrub, and forested, wetlands, riparian forests, oak and pine grassland, meadows, and mixed deciduous/coniferous forests common to Western Oregon prior to settlement.
