Kiras Bangun

Kiras Bangun (1852 - October 22, 1942) is a national hero of Indonesia.

Bangun was born as the son of a Muslim scholar in 1852, in the village of Batu Karang, in the Karo Regency, North Sumatra.

He opposed the Dutch occupation of Aceh and led an underground movement in Karo.

Bangun, who was also known by the name of Garamata, was exiled from 1919 to 1926 to Cipinang prison with his two children.

Bangun was given the title "Gelar Pahlawan Nasional Indonesia" (National Hero of Indonesia) on November 9, 2005 by president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
