Kolese Kanisius is a school in Jakarta, Indonesia. It was established in 1927 by a group of Jesuit pastors, and is listed as one of Jesuit Schools. Since its birth in 1927, the Catholic school has only accepted male students. The school is located in Menteng, Central Jakarta.

Mottos and values

The school has adopted several mottoes:
*Men for and with others
*Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam (For the Greater Glory of God)
*Competence, Conscience, and Compassion (commonly known as "3C" in the school)

The values which are represented by the mottoes are mostly adopted from some of Jesuit values.

Administration structure

The school is led by a Rector, who oversees the Senior and Junior High School Directors (Principals). Each principal has three vice principals, one each for Curricular Affairs, General Affairs, and Student Affairs, the last one more commonly known as the Moderator inside the school. The Rector, Directors, and Moderators are usually Jesuit Pastors.

History

Early Period

Canisius' history began on October 26th 1926 with the arrival of father Dr. J. Kurris SJ, Canisius College's first director. Thanks to him, on June 1 1927, the first class of AMS (Algemene Middlebare School) was started. The building of dormitories, hall and tennis court was finished on July 1929, and on October 26th 1931 Canisius College achieved official status with the appointing of Father A van Hoof SJ as its first rector

The Age of Development

Although it had new buildings, many students, and a complete faculty, there were initially many shortcomings. Therefore an important effort was begun, the forming of a core of education with a vision and mission to create a united and responsible society. Canisius developed in many area, such as the establishment of a choir, orchestra, theatre club, "Pemancar CC" magazine and scouts.

In 1938, Father van Hoof was replaced by Father G de Quay. His difficult task was to establish an HBS school. So, in that same year, a two-story building and a dormitory was built in the east wing. The building work was suspended because of World War II and Father Quary was reassigned. During the war, all activities were suspended and CC was used as a public high school. It wasonly on January 1 1946 CC was re-opened. The plan to build an HBS was continued under Father Bastiaan SJ, until 1948.

The position of Rector from1940-1947 was held by Father J van den Linden SJ. The post of Rector was then taken over by Father L Ingen Housz SJ. On August 1st 1949, the wheels of Canisius started to spin again. This happened simultaneously with an important occasion for Indonesia, the handing over of power from the Dutch to the Indonesian government. Consequently, before Christmas 1949, the students sang the national anthem Indonesia Raya for the first time. From 1951 to 1952 Father V D Meulen SJ was director of Canisius College. The college's 25th anniversary ended with a "Decorated Bikes Parade", as an adaptation of that day's trend, with new sports such as basketball, fun walk, and handball.

1952-1967 Period

From 1952-1953, Canisius' educational mission was surer and had found its way. In 1952, Canisius opened Junior High and Senior High schools, while JBS was also still there, although only for a time while transitioning. At this time, the Director of Junior High and Senior High was Father Krekelberg SJ (now Father Kiswara SJ). From 1953-1954, Father H Vroom SJ was rector, and was then succeeded by J V Waijenburg until 1960.

For 15 years (1952-1967), in both Junior High and Senior High Canisius schools, 90%-100% students graduated passing the National Final Exam. In 1962, Canisius was etrusted to open experimental classes A and C to fulfill P&K (Indonesia's Ministry of Education) law. Mr Sutaryo Komara B.Sc was appointed as vice director of Senior High because Canisius Senior High class was more than twelve. In August 1st 1964, Father C J M Jeuken S K became director of Junior High-Senior High replacing Father Krekelberg SJ. He brought about a number of changes such as the increase of programs in Senior High to four: Culture, Social Studies, Social-science, and Science.

To strengthen relations with other school and the alumni, friendly sport competitions and also PORASKA (competitions between Catholic schools) were held. These competitions involved men as well as women, so Canisius worked together with Saint Ursula and Saint Theresia Senior High schools. Art activities, which had been halted, were also resurrected during this period with the evening choir 1967 together with Theresia and Ursula Senior High.

Scouting activities were started in 1962. Camping was held almost every holiday with large numbers of students involved. PPSK (Catholic School Student Union) was the pioneer of the future OSIS (School Student Union). The Canisius branch was quite active during the 1952-1967 period. PPSK CC was also involved in sweeping actions against the PKI (Indonesia Communist Party) following the G30S incident. In March 1966, CC was even involved in patrols in school with weapons lent by army-member parents, while the classes continued as usual.

Another activity that deserves attention is the amateur radio station "Pemancar Kanisius". In the position of rector, Father Pollman SJ replaced Father Weijenburg SJ and was later replaced by Father Ingen-Housz SJ for the 1962-1967 period.

1967-1977 Period

In 1967, for the first time, CC was led by an alumnus, Father Prayitno SJ. It was in this year that CC celebrated its 40th anniversary, limited to alumni only. Also in this 1967, the dormitory was converted into classrooms. In the area of education, the curriculum was changed and was again divided into three areas of study: Culture-Literature, Social Economics, and Science. At the same time, a joint exam was held with schools such as St Ursula, Pangudi Luhur, Budi Mulia, etc. This period was characterized by much renewal. The post of Junior High head passed to Father Sewaka SJ from Father Jeuken SJ. In 1974, there was development of a parish house. In order to celebrate 50 year Canisius, a motor rally in which Porsija helped was held on 17 July 1977 and a bazaar was held to help schools in Central Java.

To follow up the P&K curriculum, in the beginning of 1974, CC implemented a point credit system together with St Ursula and Theresia schools. The system was aimed at improving the quality and skills of CC Junior High school graduates. The next improvement was developing a new 2-story building with assistance from the Dutch. At the beginning of 1975, Drs A J Djuwarta was appointed vice-principal to handle elucidation. Over an 11 year period at CC, there were 3 different systems: National Final Examination System (1966-1970), School Final Examination System (1971-1975), and Point Credit System (1976). The 13-year leadership of Father Jeuken SJ ended and he was replaced by Father J I G M Drost SJ, who had been the rector of IKIP Sanata Dharma. Then, "Rector" became "Superior". The post of Moderator was held by Father Udyasusanta SJ, where as the first Moderator was Father Sewaka SJ (1970-1976)

1977-1987 Period

In 1982, Canisius Senior High School became a national test sample center, where CC was asked to represent 20 smartest students to determine the top margin of academic ability. In the same year, the final school exam known as EBTANAS started. The subjects evaluated in EBTANAS were State Ideology, Education and the Indonesian language. Father Drost SJ also participated in the arrangement of the 1984 curriculum. There was also a PMDK system starting in the same period.

The college had 3 kinds of libraries on this period; one for teachers, a linguistic library (organized by Mr Toto Sudarto) and the CC Junior High-Senior High library. In 1980-1981, some colloquium were held at the initiative of Father Udya Susanto SJ and Sister Fransesco Mariyanto OSU. Teachers of Catholic Schools held a colloquium in Sukabumi.

Art in CC also showed a big improvement. Initiated by Father Azis Mardopo SJ (1981-1983 sub-moderator), and Father Sandyawan Sumardi SJ (1983-1985 sub-moderator, now a renowned social activist), Craddha, CC's drama theater, was established. Its members were not only from CC but also from Tarakanita, St Ursula, and Sancta Maria. There was a poetry night where poets from the TIM arts center always attended. CC sometimes won scholarly paper competitions. Another routine program was JCC.

The other activity that needed attention was Canipress, which was lacking funds. However, the editorial staff refused to deliver the magazine to each student and raised the school fee. Related to Press Day in 1987, Canipress was invited to attend National Wall Newspaper competition by Nona Magazine. Canipress was the national winner. Because of that, magazine and a "wall newspaper" were developed in the junior high and senior high schools.

In May 1984, Father Sewaka SJ was replaced by Father Subroto Widjojo SJ and the position of junior high principal was occupied by Father Widiatmaka SJ. In 1985, the position of junior high principal was handed over to Father Nico Dumais SJ. The tasks of moderator were assigned to Father Wuryanto SJ with the assistance of Father Heru Hendarto SJ and Father Eduard Ratu SJ. The chief of Canisius College Household, Brother Hadjaatmadja SJ migrated to Sukorejo, and was replaced by Brother FX Wirjasudarma SJ. At the beginning of 1987, Father Suyundata was the director of Canisius senior High School (now Seminari Wacana Bakti, Pejaten). The position of vice principal, which had been occupied by Mr Sutaryo Komara, passed to Mr A Sudarsana. Since 1987, under new leader, Father Drs Suyudanta SJ, Canisius High School has used a homeroom-teacher system.

1987-1997 period

Canisius College made continuous improvements in order to promote be excellence as an educational service center. To support the teaching process and modern education, more infrastructure was developed. In 1991, two buildings in front of Menteng Raya 66 and 68 designed by Fermont-Cuypers, which had been used as a dormitory and radio station, were demolished. On the site, a new four-story building (consisting of a canteen, car park, classrooms, labs, and meeting rooms) was built. The old auditorium in the middle of CC was remodelled to become a two-story building. The first story was for the administration office, the principal's office, and library, while the second story was for auditorium. In this period, OSIS ceased operations (1995-1997) because of unsuitable writing on the "wall newspaper". However, on the request of students,, OSIS was reactivated for freshmen after Percasis.

1997-now

In academic year 1997/1998, the last P4 (civics) program was run. It was replaced by MOS (Freshmen Orientation Day). But "Percasis" still continues as an acquaintanceship facility of the freshmen, in the Junior High and in Senior High schools. In 1997, the Junior High principal changed. Father Arko was placed by Mr A J Djuwarta, who had worked in Canisius College for a long time.

1997 was also the beginning of the Indonesia economic crisis, which caused the price of food and drinks sold in the canteen to soar. Canisius Senior High students set up a new extracurricular program, SOCIUS (Solidarity of Canisius), a CC social team concerned about the conditions of Indonesia. Socius was a realization of the school motto, "Man for Others". At the beginning of year 1998, the political situation in Indonesia started to become uncertain, as did the security condition in Jakarta. Furthermore when the May 1998 riots occurred, students who were taking EBTANAS had to stay in school. In 1999, Canisius's Chapel was renovated and its seating capacity enlarged. On Christmas Eve 2000, two bombs exploded in front of the school's courtyard setting nine car into a blaze, part of the Christmas Eve bomb attacks.

Since 2000, a new rule has been implemented: students who are caught cheating are expelled. This rule was opposed by CC students, who demonstrating at the college, with silent action and oration. 2001 saw a high turnover of college officials, with Father Baskoro becoming a Senior High School Headmaster, replacing Father R B Riyo Mursanto SJ who became a rector. Then, Father J Moerti Yoedho Koesoemo SJ formerly a moderator in de Britto College, became the high school moderator. In the Junior High School, Mr A J Djuwarta was replaced by Brother Justinus Triyono SJ, and Father Guido Chrisna Hidayat SJ became Moderator. With this change, for the first time, CC had a complete component of school managements, without any officials holding more than one post.

This was a glorious period for sports at CC. College teams won soccer, basketball, volley, and tennis table competitions. Also at this time, the CC Cup was transformed into the Central Cup 2000 (in corporation with St Ursula and St Theresia schools), then transformed again into the Cardinal Cup 2001 (involving seven schools working together), and restored again into the CC Cup in 2002. Students' art activities showed significant improvements in this period. In theater, CC performed the English musical The Sound of Music. This event was a collaboration between CC and Santa Ursula High School, and the success of this event was a breakthrough for future generations. The following year, Canisius College, together with St Theresia High School, presented the Broadway musical drama West Side Story, also in English, as a part of the Canisius Art Blast.

To support competence, several students established the CEF (Canisius English Forum), a discussion group giving training in debate, speech, and story telling in English). The new extracurricular, Canisius Red Cross (CRC), was established as was KISS CC (now the Canisius Science Club) which has done a lot of scientific experiments.

2002 was a very busy year because Canisius College celebrated its 75th anniversary. In the spirit of celebrating this event, a "Direktori Alumni Kolese Kanisius Jakarta" book was written. Other than that, there was also City Fun Walk (Sept 2001), Canisius Golf Tournament and a grand reunion on August 10th 2002.In 2004, the second Canisius Art Blast, which included a performance of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar, was held, in collaboration with St Ursula Senior High School. Since then, the Canisius Art Blast has become a biennial school event. In this year, the Canisius Wind Ensemble orchestra, was invited to perform in a banquet night at Presidential palace on August 17th, which was attended by Megawati Sukarnoputri, the then president of Indonesia.

In 2005, break dancing became popular in Indonesia and many students wanted to learn it. Therefore, Canisius provided a place for these breakers named Canibreak. In the new teaching period, Canisius rebuilt its barren soccer field. In 6 months, it became a green field surrounded by running tracks.

In April 2006, Canisius held an Eating Fruit and Vegetable event. MURI (Indonesian Museum of Records) was invited to log the record in which 1223 people were involved in eating fruit and vegetables simultaneously. This event was also attended by many celebrities and guests such as W S Rendra, the renowned Indonesian poet, and Olga Lidya, a female model acting as a moderator. Also in the same year, the third Canisius Art Blast was held, mainly focusing on the English musical drama "Grease". The event was so well-received that it was re-run on national TV the following summer. In this year, Father Guido Chrisna Hidayat, SJ, the junior high school moderator was replaced with Father Eko Budi Santoso, SJ. Father Guido was sent to Sri Lanka to take the study.

Activities in 2007 have included the celebration of 80 years of Canisius College. This began with a golf tournament in April 2007, continued with the Jakarta Metropolitan Race in June 2007 and will end with Eucharist at Canisius College on November 11, 2007. In August 2007, the Canisius Wind Ensemble (CWE) was again invited to perform at the presidential palace, celebrating the 62nd anniversary of Indonesian Independence.

2008
Starting January 2008, Father Eko Budi Santoso - the then Junior High School Moderator - became the principal of Canisius Junior High School because Brother Justinus Triyono SJ went to teach in a university in Jogjakarta, Indonesia. The moderator place is held by Mr. Trihandoko until August 2008, when Father John Nugroho, was appointed as a the Junior High School Moderator.

Education

As a private school, Canisius College follows the Indonesia curriculum, currently KTSP(Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan).

In the high school, students are divided into two programs: Science stream and Social stream. Being the most preferred program, the science stream consists of five classes, while the social stream consists of one class for 11th year and 2 classes for 12th year.

Each year, Canisius Senior High sends its representatives to the national and international science olympiads.
