List of Governors-General of New Zealand

The following is a list of the Governors and Governors-General of New Zealand. The Governor-General is the representative of the Sovereign in right of New Zealand (currently, Queen Elizabeth II). The Governor-General acts as the Queen's vice-regal representative in New Zealand and is often viewed as the "de facto" head of state.cite web|author=Gavin Mclean|title=The Governors, New Zealand Governors and Governors-General|publisher=Otago University Press|url=http://www.otago.ac.nz/press/booksauthors/2006/governors.html|isbn=13 978 1 877372 25 4|date=October 2006] cite web|author=Colin James|url=http://www.colinjames.co.nz/herald/Herald_2006/Herald_column_06Aug22.htm|title=The huge challenge ahead of the Maori Queen's successor|publisher=New Zealand Herald|date=2006-08-22] cite news|publisher=The Evening Post|title=Republic 'inevitable' - Clark|date=2002-03-04] As the representative of New Zealand's monarch, the Governor General performs many of the functions vested in the Crown. This includes summoning and dissolving Parliament, granting or withholding the Royal Assent, and ceremonial roles such as making state visits and receiving ambassadors. These functions are performed on the advice of the Prime Minister, and the Governor General would only exercise their "reserve powers" in extraordinary situations, such as if the Prime Minister had lost a vote of confidence.

The official website for the Governor-General of New Zealand provides the recognised list.cite web| url=http://www.gov-gen.govt.nz/gg/former.htm |title=Governor-General of New Zealand: Former Governors-General |publisher=gov-gen.govt.nz |accessdate=2007-10-20] Persons listed in light grey are Administrators of the Government between Governors and Governors-General.
