1874 FA Cup Final

1874 FA Cup Final

The 1874 FA Cup Final took place at Kennington Oval in London, and was won by Oxford University by two goals to nil against the Royal Engineers.

Both sides had been on the losing sides before in the final; the Engineers losing in 1872, and Oxford losing in the previous year's competition.

Route to the Final

There were only five rounds in the whole tournament, including the final. Oxford played Upton Park in their opening match, securing an easy 4–0 victory. In Round 2, they overcame Barnes 2–1. The Quarter-final was the big match for Oxford. They were pitted against the twice champions, and currently undefeated in the FA Cup as a whole, Wanderers. However, a solitary goal propelled Oxford University into the Semi-finals, where they encountered Clapham Rovers, whom they had played in the previous year's competition. The win was secured yet again by just one goal.

Royal Engineers started with a bang, beating Brondesbury 5–0. This set up a tie with Uxbridge, FA Cup "virgins". After a tense match, the Royal Engineers won 2–1. The Quarter-final was against Maidenhead, who were soundly beaten 7–0. After a comfortable 2–0 win against the Swifts in the Semi-finals, the Royal Engineers qualified for the final.
