Serenade for Strings (Tchaikovsky)

Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings in C major, Op. 48, premiered in 1880. It remains one of the late Romantic era's most definitive compositions.

In his score, Tchaikovsky supposedly wrote, "The larger the string orchestra, the better will the composer's desires be fulfilled."

Form

"Serenade for Strings" has 4 movements:

# Pezzo in forma di sonatina: Andante non troppo; Allegro moderato; this was in homage to Mozart
# Valse: Moderato; Tempo di valse
# Élégie: Larghetto elegiaco
# Finale (Tema russo): Andante; Allegro con spirito
