Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, it also appeared as the b-side to the single, "She's a Rainbow". Jagger reportedly wrote the lyrics in Brixton prison following his conviction on drug charges in June 1967.cite book |last=Davis |first=S.|title=Old Gods Almost Dead: The 40 Year Odyssey of the Rolling Stones |publisher=Aurum Press |date=2002 |page=p. 217 |] The working title of the instrumental backing was "Toffee Apple."

The number was regularly featured during the Rolling Stones' 1989-90 Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle Tours; until 1997, when "She's a Rainbow" was also added to the band's stage repertoire, it was the only track from "Satanic Majesties" that the band had performed in concert. "2000 Light Years from Home" has been covered by the 1980s post-punk band The Danse Society, metal band Grave Digger, stoner rock group Monster Magnet and by singer/songwriter Rachael Yamagata on the Robin Danar compilation album "Altered States".
