Fernie Ghostriders

Fernie Ghostriders

The Fernie Ghostriders are a Canadian Junior 'B' ice hockey team from Fernie, British Columbia playing in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. Their home ice is the Fernie Memorial Arena. The team takes its name from the "Ghost Rider", an iconic shadow that appears on Mount Hosmer and is visible from the city. Mount Hosmer appears on the team's current logo.

History

The Ghostriders have played in the KIJHL since the 2004 season, but had previously operated for a decade at Junior 'A' level in a variety of leagues. They played in the NAHL for one season before their move down, but their franchise rights were sold to a Kalamazoo, Michigan based group.

The Ghostriders won their division for the 2005/06 season, but failed to beat the Beaver Valley Nitehawks for the rights to play in the championship game. The Ghostriders won the 2006-07 KIJHL Championship, but did not fare as well in the Cyclone Taylor Cup, losing all of their games.

The Ghostriders won the 2007-08 KIJHL Championship, 2nd championship in a row, And won Bronze in the Cyclone Taylor Cup.

The Fernie Ghostriders have been around in some variety since 1991. The team was a charter member of the Southern Division of the now-defunct Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League, which was a Junior 'A' league, taking a year of absence in 1992-93. They won their RMJHL Southern Division in 1993-94.

When the RMJHL went defunct in 1999, Fernie was the only Canadian team in the league. That year, the Ghostriders joined the America West Hockey League, winning the championship in the 1999-00 season with a record of 48-8-2, and made an appearance in the Gold Cup National Championship.

The Ghostriders were US Junior National Gold Cup Bronze Medal Winners in 2003.
