- Geology of Iceland
The geology of Iceland is unique and of particular interest to
geologists. Icelandlies on the geologic riftbetween the Eurasian plateand the North American plate. It also lies above a hotspot, the Iceland plume, which is believed to have caused the formation of Iceland itself. The result is an island of volcanismand geothermal phenomena such as geysers.
The eruption of
Lakiin 1783caused much devastation and loss of life and affected Europe.
In the period
1963to 1967the new island of Surtseywas created on the southwest coast by a volcanic eruption.
