Archippus (Greek for "master of the horse") was an early Christian believer mentioned briefly in the New Testament epistles of Philemon and Colossians.

Role in scripture

In Paul's letter to Philemon (bibleref|Philemon|1:2|NAB), Archippus is named once alongside Philemon and Apphia as a host of the church, and a "fellow soldier." In bibleref|Colossians|4:17|NAB (ascribed to Paul), the church is instructed to tell Archippus to "complete the task that you have received in the Lord." No other information is given in the New Testament.

Role in tradition

He is believed to have been the first bishop of Colossae, Phyrgia, (now Turkey). Tradition further dicates that he was one of the 72 disciples appointed by Jesus Christ in bibleref|Luke|10:1|NAB. In the Roman Catholic Church, Saint Archippus' feast day is observed on March 20.
