Commanding Officers

The first Colonel commanding this regiment was John Curtis Caldwell, formerly a school-teacher and principal in East Machias, Maine with no prior military experience. Nonetheless, he was promoted to Brigadier General in 1862 and went on to play a central role in the Battle of Gettysburg. He was in the Honour Guard accompanying Lincoln's body from Washington to Springfield, and became a diplomat after the war, serving as Consul in Valparaiso, Chile and Costa Rica, and Ambassador to Uruguay. He died in Calais, Maine in 1912. [ [http://www.rocemabra.com/~roger/tagg/generals/general07.html John Curtis Caldwell] Larry Tagg, "The Generals of Gettysburg", Retrieved June 28, 2008]
