Stanlow Abbey

Stanlow Abbey

Stanlow Abbey (or Stanlaw Abbey) was a Cistercian abbey situated on Stanlow Point on the Wirral.

The abbey was founded in 1178 by John FitzRichard, the sixth Baron of Halton. However, due to its situation, it was ever in danger from the sea, with three disasters recorded between 1279 and 1289.

Most of the monks quit the abbey in 1296, moving to a new foundation at Whalley in Lancashire. [cite web

The only remains of the abbey are a doorway, wall and four columns, located between the River Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal.
