Robert Guy Atkinson (born April 29, 1987 in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire) is an English footballer who currently plays for Barnsley as a defender.

Atkinson has come through the youth ranks with Barnsley, making his debut on 6 March 2004.

In the 2005/06 he had a six month loan spell with Scarborough playing 22 league games.

He was then loaned out in 2006/07 to Halifax Town. After some impressive performances, Atkinson was recalled to Barnsley following injuries to Bobby Hassell, Paul Reid and Antony Kay.

Atkinson played his first full game for Barnsley on 26 December 2006, in a 1-0 win over Burnley, picking up the man of the match award.

He signed for Grimsby Town on loan in November 2007 and he has been a first team regular since then, he scored his first goal for Grimsby Town against Chester City on the 1st January 2008. He also played the full 90 minutes at Wembley, in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final defeat to MK Dons

Atkinson was singled out by Grimsby fans, as one of there more stronger players in the season, and in May 2008, manager Alan Buckley revealed his desire to bring Atkinson back to the club on loan or possibly on a permanent deal. This deal as of the end of June 2008 looked and still does look very unlikely that this transfer will take place due to Alan Buckley bringing in two center backs.
