William J. Mills

William Joseph Mills (January 11, 1849, Yazoo City, Mississippindash December 24, 1915, East Las Vegas, New Mexico) [http://politicalgraveyard.com/bio/mills.html The Political Graveyard: Index to Politicians: Mills ] ] was the 19th governor of the New Mexico Territory, now the U.S. state of New Mexico.

Public Offices

In 1878 he was elected as a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives. He then served in the Connecticut Senate as a Democrat, [ [http://www.cslib.org/conngares.asp Members of the Connecticut General Assembly: Search Results ] ] representing the 4th District in 1881 and the 8th District in 1882.

Moving to the New Mexico Territory, he was a justice of the New Mexico territorial supreme court from 1898 to 1910.

He was appointed Governor of the Territory on December 20, 1909, but was not inaugurated until March 1, 1910, succeeding George Curry who had resigned effective February 28. Mills was a Republican.Fact|date=May 2007
