The National Union of Students Scotland is an autonomous body within the National Union of Students. It is the national representative body of 530,000 students studying in further and higher education in Scotland and was formed following the merger of NUS in Scotland with the Scottish Union of Students in 1971.

As of July 2011, NUS Scotland's full-time sabbaticals are President Robin Parker from University of Aberdeen, Depute President Graeme Kirkpatrick from Aberdeen College and Women's Officer Kelley Temple from University of Strathclyde.

Parker succeeded Liam Burns, who served as President of NUS Scotland from 2009-2011 and is now President of NUS UK.

Democratic Structure

NUS Scotland policy is set by the 13-member Scottish Executive Council (SEC), which meets monthly.

The NUS Scotland President, Depute President, Mature Students' Officer and six Scottish Executive Council (SEC) positions are elected each year at the NUS Scotland Conference, which is usually held in March, by student representatives from member students’ associations. All elected officers hold the post from 1 July to 30 June.

Of the six open block Scottish Executive Council positions, two are reserved for further education students. The remaining seven SEC positions are filled by the President, Depute President, Liberation Officers (Women's Officer, Black Students' Officer, LGBT Students' Officer, Disabled Students' Officer) and the Mature Students' Officer.

Elected officers can hold each post for a maximum of two years.
