WMOT Records

W.M.O.T. ("We Men of Talent") Records, an independent recording company in Philadelphia, produced a number of singles in the "Philadelphia sound" soul tradition (see Philadelphia soul). The best selling record among those produced by WMOT was Double Dutch Bus by Frankie Smith, [Philadephia Weekly, "The Deals on the Bus Go 'Round and 'Round, 2/16/05] which hit number one on the Billboard soul chart and sold more than 2 million copies. [MySpace.com-Frankie Smith] Other WMOT artists include: Count Coolout, Barbara Mason, Captain Sky, Funk Fusion Band, Bliss, Heaven and Earth, and Fat Larry's Band.

WMOT operated independently in the 1970s and 80s, and was owned by Steve Bernstein, Alan Rubens, and David Chacker, before this group sold the company to Michael Goldberg, Allen Cohen, and Jeff and Mark Salvarian. Larry Lavin bought a stake in WMOT in the 80s, and it was his activity in the company that led to lawsuits over money laundering in 1984 that brought the company down. WMOT Records is now a sub-label of CBS/Sony Records.
