The Graduate University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (zh-sp|s=中国科学院研究生院|p=Zhōngguó Kēxuéyuàn Yánjiūshēngyuàn) or GUCAS.Founded in 1978, Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (GSCAS) was the first graduate school in China with the approval of the State Council. Backed by more than one hundred institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), which are located at more than 20 cities all over the country, GSCAS is headquartered in Beijing, with graduate education bases in Shanghai, Chengdu, Wuhan, Guangzhou and Lanzhou. From GSCAS, graduated China's first doctoral student in science, first doctoral student in engineering, first female doctoral student and first student with double doctoral degrees in China. On the 20th anniversary of GSCAS in 1998, President Jiang Zemin of the People's Republic of China wrote this inscription for the School: "Revitalizing China through science and education, and emphasizing the cultivation and nurturing of talented people." By 2002, more than 20,000 Ph.D. students and 40,000 Master students had graduated from GSCAS.

In 2005, The name "Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences" changed to "Graduate University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences".

Admissions

GUCAS, through its various departments and research institutes of the CAS across the country, offers the following programs to foreign students in a wide range of specialties and research fields: Master Program, PhD. Program, Program for Regular Visiting Students, and Program for Senior Visiting Students.

CHAPTER I APPLICATION

1. Qualifications  Any foreigners who are healthy and willing to abide by the Chinese laws and decrees, respect the Chinese customs and habits, and meet the following qualifications may apply directly to GUCAS or CAS institutes. Foreigners wishing to study at GUCAS may request an application form (GUCAS Application For Admission for Foreign Students) from the International Students Office (ISO)of GUCAS (See Chapter VII for contact details), or download the application form from GUCAS website directly.

Master Program:  An applicant must be under 40 years old, has obtained or is working in the last year toward a Bachelor degree of China, or the foreign equivalent of such a degree. In the latter case, admission will be contingent on the final receipt of such a degree.

PhD. Program:  An applicant must be under 45 years old, has obtained or is working toward a Master degree of China, or the foreign equivalent of such a degree. In the latter case, admission will be contingent on the final receipt of such a degree.

Program for Regular Visiting Students:  An applicant must be under 45 years old, has obtained a Bachelor degree of China, or the foreign equivalent of such a degree.

Program for Senior Visiting Students:  An applicant must be under 45 years old, has obtained a Master degree of China, or the foreign equivalent of such a degree.

2. Application Materials to Be Submitted: ● An Application for Admission for Foreign Students, with a recent passport-sized photo attached; ● Application fee (nonrefundable); ● Degree certificate of the highest education level (notarized photocopy); ● Transcripts of undergraduate and/or graduate studies (notarized photocopy/photocopies); ● Two letters of recommendation from your instructors at least at associate professor level or other person familiar with your activities with equivalent academic achievement; ● Curriculum vitae; ● A financial support statement by your sponsor along with bank statements (original or notarized photocopy); ● An Application Form for GUCAS Scholarship for those wishing to apply for such scholarship.

 If any of the materials is neither in Chinese nor in English, a copy of notarized translation in Chinese or English is required.

 For applicants outside mainland China, payments must be made in US dollars in the form of personal check or money order or travelers check attached to the application form, payable to the GUCAS. For applicants currently in mainland China, payments must be made in Chinese currency by sending money directly to the following bank account (Please specify that the money is for the application fee):

CHAPTER II ENTRANCE EXAMINATION AND ADMISSION

 There are two ways for GUCAS admission. One is general admission open to the public, and the other is special admission under CAS international exchange agreements or agreements at the institute level acknowledged by CAS. In the latter case, degree applicants should go through special entrance examinations or other procedures in accordance to the agreements.

General Admission Procedures

1. Preliminary Examination: Applicants for Master Program or PhD. Program are required to take a preliminary examination, which consists of two tests in the applicants’ respective academic fields and one English test. Applicants whose native language or official language is English will be exempted from the English test. All the tests are in written form and each lasts for 3 hours. Applicants will be notified of the time and venue of the tests after their application is received by GUCAS.

2. Interview: Applicants having passed the preliminary examination should expect to be interviewed, and should be responsible for all the travel and other related expenses. An interview notice will be sent to each applicant.

3. Admission An Admission Letter and a Visa Application for Study in China (Form JW202) will be sent to the successful applicant who will study in China for more than one year; and an Admission Letter will be sent to those who will study in China for less than one year.

CHAPTER III VISA APPLICATION AND REGISTRATION

 Applicants admitted should bring passport, Admission Letter, Visa Application for Study in China, Foreigner Physical Examination Form to the embassy or consulates of the People’s Republic of China in their respective countries and apply for a visa. New students should register before the deadline stipulated by GUCAS or their respective CAS institute, and pay the tuition fee. Students unable to register before the deadline should make advanced arrangement with GUCAS or their respective CAS institute. All the newly registered students will be subject to a physical reexamination and those found unqualified will not be allowed to study in GUCAS.

CHAPTER IV PROGRAM DURATION

 It takes 2-3 years for students to complete the Master Program, and 3-4 years to complete the PhD. Program. A graduation certificate and a degree will be conferred to the students upon their successful completion of the curriculum and the defense of degree dissertation, and upon their meeting of all the other requirements stipulated by the GUCAS Degree Conferring Regulations.  Students who are unable to successfully complete their curriculum, or are disqualified from presenting degree dissertation, or fail their defense of degree dissertation will be permitted to continue their study as visiting students or will be asked to quit their study, depending on the individual situation.  The program for all visiting students is no more than 2 years. A certificate will be issued upon a student’s meeting of his/her program requirements.

CHAPTER V EXPENSES

1. Application Processing Fee Master Program and PhD Program: RMB ¥600 ( 600 Yuan RMB); Program for Regular Visiting Students and Program for Senior Visiting Students: RMB ¥450 ( 450 Yuan RMB).

2. Tuition Fee Master Program:         RMB ¥30,000 /year (30,000 Yuan RMB per year); PhD Program:   Liberal Arts:           RMB ¥34,000/year (34,000 Yuan RMB per year)   All Other Disciplines:       RMB ¥40,000/year (40,000 Yuan RMB per year); Program for Regular Visiting Students: RMB ¥2,600/month (2,600 Yuan RMB per month); Program for Senior Visiting Students: RMB ¥3,000/month (3,000 Yuan RMB per month).

3. Extra Fieldwork Expenses:  Extra activities dealing with experiments, fieldwork and travels beyond the education plan stipulated by GUCAS.

4. Other Personal Expenses:  Room and board, medical treatment, insurance and teaching materials, etc.

CHAPTER VI SCHOLARSHIP

 GUCAS offers scholarship to students with outstanding academic achievements. Interested applicants may apply by submitting the Application Form for GUCAS Scholarship, which can be requested directly from GUCAS or downloaded from GUCAS website

Institutions

1951 After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the number of graduate students enrolled by the CAS made up 34.4 percent of the first group of graduate students admitted to universities in the country.

1955 With the ratification of The Tentative Regulations on Graduate Students in the CAS, a Chinese graduate students' system was formed.

1955-1965 The CAS graduated a total of 1,518 graduate students.

1977 The CAS was the first institution to be approved by the State Council to resume the enrollment of graduate students.

1978 Ratified by the State Council, the Graduate School (Beijing) of the University of Science and Technology of China was founded, as the first graduate school in China.

2000 Ratified by the Degrees Committee of the State Council and the Ministry of Education, the Graduate School (Beijing) of Science and Technology (USTC) was renamed Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (GUCAS).

Backed by more than 110 institutes of the CAS, which are located at more than 20 cities all over the country, GUCAS is headquartered in Beijing with 4 campuses, and 5 branches in Shanghai, Chengdu, Wuhan, Guangzhou and Lanzhou. From GUCAS, graduated China's first doctoral student in science, first doctoral student in engineering, first female doctoral student and first student with double doctoral degrees in China.  GUCAS offers programs in nine major academic fields: science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, philosophy, economics, literature, education and management science. The university is authorized to grant advanced degrees in 26 primary academic disciplines which include Master degree conferring rights in 130 secondary disciplines, and Doctoral degree rights in 114 secondary disciplines.

 The excellent faculty of our university is composed of over 300 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and/or the Chinese Academy of Engineering, over 6000 academic supervisors devoting themselves to the education of students. GUCAS lays emphasis on an international perspective and open education. GUCAS often invites the world's first-class scientists and scholars to teach and give lectures or seminars. These lectures and seminars, on the frontiers of science, together with some special education programs designed to enhance students' knowledge in the fields of social sciences and humanities, art and aesthetics widen students' vision and stimulate their academic thinking.

 GUCAS has a remarkable advantage in a variety of disciplines, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology, biology, mechanics, material science, energy science, electronic information, automation, computer science and technology, and biological engineering. The GUCAS will strengthen its effort in the building of applied disciplines, new interdisciplines, humanities and social sciences while maintaining its academic advantages. GUCAS boasts a galaxy of pioneering scientists with lots of achievements. Involved in many research projects at the cutting edge of world science with excellent facilities, they command recognition both at home and abroad. At various CAS institutes, there are 3 national laboratories, 55 state key laboratories, 70 CAS key laboratories and 27 R&D Centers for technologies. There are also pioneering research projects and good research facilities at these institutes. Thanks to all these advantages, students at GUCAS have not only been able to acquire solid basic knowledge, quick scientific insight and active creative thinking, but also develop fine qualities of realistic approach, truth seeking attitude, collaborative work, and creative spirit. GUCAS offers "General Scholarship for Graduate Students", "CAS Scholarship", "CAS President Scholarship" and various other sponsored scholarships. The financial aid system of "research assistantship", "administration assistantship" and "teaching assistantship" has been put into practice in GUCAS.

 At present, with annual enrolments of more than 10,000 students, GUCAS has over 30,000 ongoing students, among whom 51% are PhD students.

 GUCAS also offers programs for international students and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. It also provides financial aid for these students by setting up "GUCAS International Students Scholarship" and "GUCAS Scholarship for Students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan". In addition, GUCAS keeps close eyes at the development trend of international education and frontiers of international science and technology. The university carries out wide exchanges and collaboration with well-known universities, research institutions, and multinational corporations both at home and abroad. As a result, various bilateral exchange and cooperation relations with these institutions have been established.
