See Ya (Hangul: 씨야) is a South Korean female trio made up of Nam Gyu Ri, Kim Yeon Ji, and Lee Bo Ram. Their name See Ya came from 'See You Always', which means that the group wishes to live eternally through their music for their fans. Although relatively new, See Ya has become a popular group, with high-charting singles and strong-selling albums.

Members

*Nam Gyu-Ri (남규리) (born April 26, 1985) is the leader of the group.
*Kim Yeon Ji (김연지, 金延智) (born October 30, 1986) is the lead vocal of the group.
*Lee Bo Ram (이보람, 李寶藍) (born February 17, 1987) is the youngest member and vocal for the group.

History

Their start came from the producers of boy band SG Wannabe, who decided to create a female version of the group. In 2005 they hosted auditions where Nam Gyu Ri, Kim Yeon Ji, and Lee Bo Ram were selected from a pool of about four-hundred hopefuls. The trio then received voice and dance training from k-pop's top producers and singers. It is rumored that up to 1,000,000,000 was invested on SeeYa to ensure their success.

Although their album was released in early 2006, their first single already made it to the top of the charts by spring. They debuted with "여인의 향기 (Scent of a Woman)" and "구두 (Shoes)". They have also performed "사랑하기 때문에 (Because I Love You)" which features SG Wannabe. They have continued performing through the year with "미친 사랑의 노래 (Crazy Love Song)" a song from the "Invisible Man" soundtrack. They also performed a dance remix of "Crazy Love Song" to showcase their dancing ability.

Their second album was released on May 25, 2007. Promoted with the single "사랑의 인사 ("Love's Greeting"), the album sold 81,723 copies in 2007, making it the fifth best-selling album in Korea for the year, according to the Music Industry Assocication of Korea. On January 2, 2008 SeeYa released a special album with the title "California Dream." The album stands apart for containing famous songs that the band has remade in its own way, such as "The Day," which Kim Yeon-ji sang along with Brown Eyed Girls' Jea; "Flying in the deep night," which Nam Gyu-ri sang for a movie's original soundtrack; an OST song from the TV drama "Full House" originally performed by Lee Bo-ram, and others. The new album will also include "슬픈 발걸음 (Shoes II)," which has received a favorable response from listeners since its online release on December 17. They performed their next hit song, "그래도 좋아 (I Still Like You)," on January 31, 2008 in the Seoul Music awards.

Their third album was released on September 26, 2008. Their title track is "Hot Girl". "Hot Girl" is an electronic and upbeat song and is different to the usual songs that SeeYa promotes. Korean Top Artist Lee Hyori stated in an interview She said, “They are not only a group with singing talents, but one that has everything,” and “I have seen their hidden talents because of the closeness we share from juniors to seniors [within the company] .” She added, “I previewed the full-length album and I was so surprised at their transformation,” and “This album is one in which you can see all of SeeYa’s charms.”

Controversies

eizure of backup dancer

On August 20, 2006, a backup dancer collapsed because of a seizure during SBS's music show "Ingi Gayo". Rather than helping her, the girls kept on performing to the point where show crewmembers had to come and drag her off the stage. It has also been said that the girl had not been noticed by the dancers. This has sparked a major debate in Korea, with See Ya supporters arguing that they had to keep on performing (and that it was the backstage workers' responsibility to help her off) since it was a live show. They also pointed out that someone suffering a seizure should not be touched, while the group's detractors called the group selfish for not helping the dancer. But later in the day, SeeYa's members were said to be at the hospital being with the back up dancer. And they have posted their feelings on their fan Cafe, SeeYa With You, that they were very sorry for what had happened. Fans still supported them, but others were criticizing them for not helping the dancer. It is thought the dancer suffered the seizure due to a fever, she was suffering from before the performance, being aggravated by the flashing lights and dancing. She returned to good health following the incident.

Nam Gyu Ri's "wardrobe malfunction"

SeeYa found themselves in the midst of controversy again in December 2006 when Nam Gyu Ri's right breast was exposed while the group was performing Beyoncé's hit "Crazy in Love" at the "Big4 Concert". Nam quickly held on to her clothes and proceeded performing. Most of the audience were also unaware of the exposure due to the distance from the stage and strong spotlight. The controversy worsened as video clips and pictures of the incident spread rapidly in the internet [ [http://news.media.daum.net/society/education/200612/26/mk/v15172608.html 동영상·사진 유포…남의 일이라고 함부로?] ] .
