Mode mixture

Mode mixture

In music mode mixture or modal mixture is the use of pitches or chords from the parallel minor or major scale or key of a piece or section. The "modes" being the major and the minor modes.

Examples include borrowed chords such as a picardy third. Compare with secondary dominant. See diatonic functionality.
