Pitane (Aeolis)

Pitane (Aeolis)

Pitane (near Çandarlı, Turkey) was an ancient Greek town of Aeolis, in Asia Minor. In ancient times it was a port city and a member of the First Athenian League. About 334 BC, Macedonia's Philip II tried to take over the city, but was repulsed by Memnon and 5,000 Greek mercenaries provided by Darius III of Persia. [cite book|last=Olson|first=S. Douglas|coauthors=Alexander Sens|Title=Matro of Pitane and the Tradition of Epic Parody in the Fourth Century BCE|publisher=Oxford University Press|Year=1999] Autolycus of Pitane was born here during the fourth century BC.
