SMK Subang Utama

SMK Subang Utama

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Subang Utama, or rather known as SMKSU, was formerly known as Sekolah Menengah Subang Jaya 2.

History

This school was one of the earliest secondary school available in Subang Jaya. Back then, it was also known as School 2 (with the title of School 1 given to Sekolah Menengah Subang Jaya). The School is located at Jalan SS18/1A, which is the West of Subang Jaya and off Tujuan Avenue (Persiaran Tujuan). The school's code is BEA 8614

Construction on the campus began in 1987, but was fully ready by October 1989 and accepted its first batch of morning session students in December 4 1989. Initially, students only took up 2 blocks of the campus (C Block and D Block) as the other two blocks were occupied temporarily by students from Sekolah Rendah SS19 (SS19 Primary School). Most students come from the area of SS18.

The campus is approximately 13 acres wide with 3.9 acres of track and field, a canteen, an assembly area and 4 blocks. A single-story block consisting of four workshops (Bengkel Kemahiran Hidup) was built in 1993 for the Kemahiran Hidup subject (Electrical and Electronic, Pipe and Plumbing, Mechanical, and Technical Drawing,

On the same year, 5 science labs were fully operational and ready to accommodate students. These science labs include 2 for the lower secondary cohort, 1 physics lab, 1 biology lab and 1 chemistry lab. Due to shortage of classrooms and an increasing student population throughout the years, these science labs became temporary classrooms for Secondary Four students (Floating Class).

5 years later in 1998, construction began for the school's first surau. The old makeshift surau was closed and the surau was opened to all Muslims, including the public. Another single-storey classroom block was also built to accommodate the increasing student population of the school. This block (F Block) consists of four classrooms, and was usually allocated to Secondary Five classes.

In 2003, the volleyball court between D Block and B Block was torn down for the construction of a two-storey Computer/IT Block. The block remained vacant for a few years, and later only used for teaching purposes. A new volleyball court, along with a basketball court, were built next to A Block.

In 2003, construction of the multi-purpose hall was started. Many alumni criticized the building as it was not a proper solid wall, with students still getting wet inside when it rained. Then, the school was among the only secondary schools in Subang Jaya without a proper hall.

The five blocks (including the single-storied one) were named Anggerik, Bakawali, Cempaka, Dahlia and Flora. The fifth block was named Block F instead of E. Some speculated an expansion project by the school for another 4-storey Block, while some just took the Workshop classrooms as Block E.

There is a 'Tiang Ilmu' or Pole of Knowledge, a 'monument' built using the donation and contribution of the public as a symbol of the school's academic success.

Controversies

In June 2008, SMKSU came under the spotlight when the school allegedly threatened the organisers of the school's annual ex-prefects reunion for inviting the Pakatan Rakyat Assemblyman for Subang Jaya, Hannah Yeoh. Yeoh was a former head-prefect of the school [cite news |first=Sarah |last=Chew |authorlink= |coauthors= |title=Subang Jaya rep ‘banned’ from function at old school |url=http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2008/6/26/nation/21656893&sec=nation |work=The Star |publisher=Star Publications (M) Bhd |date=2008-06-26 |accessdate=2008-06-27 ] .
