The lighthouse was built in 1905, to a conical design using granite blocks on a granite foundation, and equipped with a first-order Fresnel lens. Operated by the United States Coast Guard, the light was automated in 1972 and has a signature of two white flashes every 12 seconds.cite web| title = Historic Light Station Information & Photography - Massachusetts | url = http://www.uscg.mil/hq/g-cp/history/WEBLIGHTHOUSES/LHMA.html | publisher = United States Coast Guard | accessdate = August 5 | accessyear = 2006] cite web| title = Graves Lighthouse, Boston Harbor, Massachusetts | url = http://www.lighthouse.cc/graves/index.html | publisher = www.lighthouse.cc | accessdate = August 5 | accessyear = 2006]
