Forward Intelligence Team

Forward Intelligence Team

Forward Intelligence Teams are units in UK police forces that use cameras, camcorders and audio recorders to conduct overt surveillance of the public. The police officers wear full uniform, and are intended to be a high visibility presence.

The teams first appeared as part of the Public Order Intelligence Unit (CO11), a section of the Public Order Branch of the Metropolitan Police, and were initially targeted at football fans and political protesters. The approach has since been extended to routine police work on low-level crime and disorder.

Despite the implication in the name that their function is to gather intelligence they are intended to have more of a deterrent effect.Fact|date=October 2008
