JDS Ishikari (DE-226)

The JDS Ishikari (DE-226) is the successor of the earlier Chikugo class. A modern Otobreda 76 mm gun replaced its predecessor's older 3-inch gun and automation greatly reduced the number of crew needed. Beginning with this ship, the traditional ASW mission of the JMSDF destroyer escort (frigate) was further expanded to include Anti-Surface Warfare by adopting the Harpoon missile.

It was decided that the Ishikari was too small to continue production, so it was succeeded by the Yubari class two years later.
