ABC Glasgow

ABC Glasgow

The ABC is a music venue in Glasgow, Scotland.

History

It opened in 2005, with a concert from Jem. It is in Sauchiehall Street, at the former location of the ABC cinema (hence the name of the venue) and is located just along the road from another of Glasgow's music venues, The Garage.

tructure of Venue

The building comprises two venues, ABC1 and ABC2, and three bars, The Pod Bar, The Mezz Bar and The Polar Bar. On several occasions people have been ousted out of the ABC for throwing drinks from the Mezz bar which is located above the Pod Bar onto the main floor of ABC1. The security staff are very aware of hooliganism and are renowned for their pre-emptive measures in order to cut back drunken behaviour. Head bouncer Bob Winslow states, "As soon as I see any hint of drunken anti-social behaviour, the people responsible have my eyes locked on their ass until we see a need to force them out." [http://www.abcglasgow.co.uk/security] This zero-tolerance policy towards anti-social behaviour has seen the venue become one of the most popular in Glasgow.

ABC1

ABC1, on the second floor, is the main venue (ABC1) and has a capacity of 1250. It houses major bands that may not be able to sell out the city's other big venues like Barrowlands, The Carling Academy (which, co-incidentally, also occupies a building that was once a cinema) and SECC/Armadillo. Bands who have played in ABC1 include The Raconteurs, Kasabian, The Charlatans, Buzzcocks, Richard Ashcroft and The Fratellis, who performed 4 sold out shows in 2 days. Arab Strap also played their final gig there. ABC1 has the world's largest genuine spinning disco ball. Nice N Sleazy's own Singer/Songwriter Gerry Lyons can be seen ripping it up in ABC1 on a Saturday night with a mix of Soul, Punk Rock & Indie Dance.

ABC2

ABC2 is a windowless smaller room on the first floor which can hold 350. Bands doing intimate tours or performances normally sell out this venue. Bands who have played in ABC2 include Explosions in the Sky, The Mode, Mono (Japanese band) and Young States. On the club scene the ABC2 plays a mix of Electro, House & Pop to generally a large student crowd.
