Alam

Alam is commonly a Muslim surname. It can be etymologically traced back from the Mughals. It can also be traced back to Arabs and the Persians. Meaning "the world," it is Arabic/Persian in its origin and is a cognate of Hebrew "olam."

'Alam also means "flag" in Arabic.

It's a last name in Lebanon for many Christian families in Rmeich, Baskinta and few other towns.Fact|date=June 2008

Alam or Abu Alam is also the name of a well known Jordanian and Syrian family of Palestinian origins (from Zaita - Tolkarem) who were named so after their great grandfather who raised the flag in some of the Ottoman army wars in Egypt.

Alam is a surname of many families in Bangladesh that trace their origins to the village of Alampur in the district of Jagannathpur.

In Indonesia, there is a small hereditary principality named Pakualaman, the rulers of which adopt a sequential instance in the "Paku Alam" name series; for instance, see Paku Alam VIII.
