Ytterøy

Ytterøy

Ytterøy is an island and a former municipality in the Trondheimsfjord, Norway.

Ytterøy was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The mainland district of Mosvik og Verran was separated from Ytterøy as a municipality of its own January 1, 1867. Ytterøy itself was merged with the municipality of Levanger January 1, 1964. A ferry runs regularly between the quayside at Levanger and the island.

The island has an approximate population of 500. It is 13.5km long and 4.3km wide at its widest point. It has a total area of around 28 square kilometers. At its highest point it is 210 meters above sea level. The island is famous for its dense deer population, and a popular hunting area for hunters from Scandinavia and Germany. In the middle of the 19'th century phosphore was exported to all of Europe from the mines here.
