The Karen languages are tonal languages spoken by the Karen people and are classified as part of the Tibeto-Burman group of the Sino-Tibetan language family. [citebook|title=The Sino-Tibetan Languages |author= Graham Thurgood, Randy J. LaPolla|year=2003|publisher=Routledge|isbn=0700711295|url= http://books.google.com/books?visbn=0700711295&id=5MeWSTQ7F44C&pg=PA44&lpg=PA44&ots=9q3UPOhcej&dq=%22Karen+languages%22&ie=ISO-8859-1&output=html&sig=HhqKW7Lozuo8wykGiHKDxmizJjM] It is written using the Burmese script. [ [http://www.omniglot.com/writing/burmese.htm Omniglot] ] The three main branches are Sgaw, Pwo, and Pa'o; they are not considered to be mutually intelligible [cite book | last = Lewis | first = Paul | authorlink = | coauthors = Elaine Lewis | year = 1984 | title = Peoples of the Golden Triangle | publisher = Thames and Hudson Ltd | location = London | isbn = 0-500-97472-1] . Karenni (also known Kayah or Red Karen) and Kayan (also known as Padaung) are related to the Sgaw branch. They are almost unique among the Tibeto-Burman languages in having a Subject Verb Object word order; other than Karen and Bai, Tibeto-Burman languages feature a Subject Object Verb order [ [http://stedt.berkeley.edu/html/STfamily.html Description of the Sino-Tibetan Language Family] ] . This is likely due to influence from neighboring Mon and Tai languages [cite journal | last = Matisoff | first = James A. | title = Sino-Tibetan Linguistics: Present State and Future Prospects | journal = Annual Review of Anthropology | volume = 20 | pages = 469–504 | publisher = Annual Reviews Inc. | date = 1991 | doi = 10.1146/annurev.an.20.100191.002345] . The languages are also considered unusual for not having any Chinese influence. [ [http://www.lanna.com/LisuLodge/html/karen.html Thai Cultural Tourism] ]
