Aminjikarai ("Amainda Karai") is one of the oldest localities in Chennai.HOw the name aminjikarai came ? , the first shop to open in that locality was Amin stores , which is still located . The area after this amin stores was called as Aminji Kadai ( which means Amin stores ) later period due to colloquial changes it became Aminjikarai . It is located on the banks of the Cooum River. The arterial Poonamallee High Road runs through it. Arumbakkam and Anna Nagar were carved out of Aminjikarai in the '50s and '70s.
