Haroonabad (Urdu: ہارون آباد) is a town of Bahawalnagar District, in the Punjab Province of Pakistan. The town is the headquarters of Haroonabad Tehsil and administrative subdivision of the district. "The town of Haroonabad is located on the edge of the Cholistan desert in southern Punjab province, close to the Indian border. In 1998 the population was 63,000 (Population Census Organization, 2001) and apart from the small-scale seasonal, cotton-related industrial activities such as washing and ginning (separation of seeds and fibre), there was no major industry in the town. The arid climate, with an annual average rainfall of 160 mm, potential evaporation of 2500 mm, and temperatures ranging from 0°C in January to 48°C in July, make agriculture without irrigation virtually impossible. Shortly after the construction of a sewerage system in 1965, farmers started using untreated wastewater pumped from the newly constructed disposal station for irrigation. In 1979 more pumps were installed in and around the town to dispose of blocked wastewater, after the sewerage system had collapsed because of heavy monsoon rains. This resulted in the development of more wastewater-irrigated sites. Currently there are three main sites with a total irrigated area of over 130 ha. "Around this town there are agricultural areas, which are irrigated with untreated urban wastewater. The main crops grown are vegetables, which are sold to the markets in the city. On the main site, located north of the city, irrigation with wastewater is being practiced for about 30 years. In the middle of this main site there is a settlement, called Muslim Colony. Most farmers who work in the main wastewater irrigated site live in this settlement.

Near Haroonabad there are two peri-urban settlements, village 53/4R and 55/4R, where socio-economic and living conditions arecomparable with the Muslim Colony. The majority of houses are constructed with bricks and the roads are partly paved in all three settlements. Furthermore, all three settlements are connected with the municipal water supply scheme, which gives a relative reliable water supply. There is an organized system for disposal of sewage water in all three settlements. In the Muslim Colony there is an open sewerage system. In the two villages several houses have closed pipes connected to a wastewater pond, while others bring their wastewater from septic tanks to these ponds by an iron barrel on a cart. In one of the villages a person is hired to take care of disposal of wastewater from the houses not connected to the wastewater pond. Only at a few places wastewater drained in the street. Vegetables are one of the major crops grown around these two villages, just as around Muslim Colony. The only major difference between the two peri-urban villages and the Muslim Colony is that farmers in the villages are irrigating their land with canal or tubewell water. Wastewater is not used for irrigation around these villages." Punjabi is the language of the city, and is the most widely spoken language in the whole district, although Urdu and English are becoming more popular with younger generations.

It is located in the south of Bahawalnagar on a distance of 50km. The population of the city is around 100,000.

Haroonabad was established in 1920's and was named after one of the sons of Nawab of Bahawalpur, as it was a new town in the State of Bahawalpur.

The irrigation canal that irrigates much of the land around Haroonabad, is called 4R. This canal was built by the British government in the early 1920s.

Most of the people are farmers owning small pieces of land. Literacy rate is very low. The weather of the city is very hot during summer and a bit relaxing during winter.

Haroonabad is famous for its cotton quality. This area is also part of Cholistan desert but most of the area is irrigated.

This city is situated in east of Pakistan.In its east, there is the border of India, in its west Chishtian (a well known progressing city) is located. and Bahawalnagar lies in its north side, & it is being bounded by Fortabbas in its south.
