Tamilnadu has an extensive road network. The Highways Department (HD) of Tamil Nadu is primarily responsible for construction and maintenance of roads including National Highways, State Highways and Major District Roads in Tamil Nadu. This Department is operating through 7 wings geographical spread across the state in 31 districts with about 120 Divisions and 450 Sub Divisions.

State Highways
The State Highways are arterial routes of a State, linking district headquarters and important towns within the State and connecting them with National Highways or Highways of the neighbouring States. There are 187 State Highways in Tamilnadu.Some of the State Highways are upgraded as National Highways. The total length of State Highways in Tamil Nadu is 6,849 km of which 279 km is of multilane, 4,005 km is of double lane, 1,180 km is of intermediate lane and 1,385 km is of single lane.
