Kopites

Kopites

Kopites are supporters of Liverpool Football Club who once stood, and now sit, on the Kop at Anfield stadium.

Overview

Kop is short for Spion Kop, a South African hill and the scene of a battle in the Second Boer War where a majority of the Liverpool Regiment had died.

A BBC "Panorama" television crew filmed at Anfield in 1964 to discuss what makes the average man act in unison with thousands of others. [John Morgan, [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87Ywgj2PWx0 The Other Mersey Sound] , BBC Panorama, 1964]

It was said in the 1960s and 70s that the Kop was worth a goal start as they could suck the ball into the net. ["Football fans who win when they're singing", The Evening Standard, March 18 2002]

Kopites are known around the world for their thunderous volume and loyal support for their club. They have a wide selection of songs which they sing regularly.
