West Penn Allegheny Health System

West Penn Allegheny Health System

West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS) is the second-largest provider of healthcare in metropolitan Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.

It competes against much-larger UPMC. Allegheny General Hospital on the city's North Side and The Western Pennsylvania Hospital (often called "West Penn Hospital") in the city's Bloomfield neighborhood are the tertiary care flagship hospitals of WPAHS; the System also includes hospitals in the suburbs: Allegheny General Suburban Campus (formerly Suburban General Hospital) in Bellevue, Alle-Kiski Medical Center in Natrona Heights/Harrison Township, Canonsburg General Hospital in Canonsburg, and The Western Pennsylvania Hospital - Forbes Regional Campus (shortened to "West Penn Hospital - Forbes Regional Campus", formerly Forbes Regional Hospital) in Monroeville.

The Western Pennsylvania Hospital became the first and only hospital in Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania to receive prestigious Magnet recognition status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) on December 7, 2006. An achievement akin to winning an Olympic gold medal, Magnet status recognizes excellence in nursing and quality patient care and has been achieved by only 4 percent of all healthcare facilities in the nation.
