Peermade

Peermade is a tiny Indian hill station, high in the Western Ghats in Kerala, India. It is located 85 km east of Kottayam on the way to Thekkady.The landscape of Peermade includes spectacular waterfalls, open grass lands and pine forests. [cite web

Peermade is named after the Sufi saint, Peer Mohammed. Peermade literally means the hill of the Peer.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the largest wildlife reserves in India, is 43 km away. It has herds of elephants and other wild life as well as wonderful lakes.

The area is very fertile and the area has lush plantations of coffee, tea, cardamon, and coconut until recently. [cite web

] However, the area has a long history of spice growing and now concentrates on producing organic black and white pepper, ginger and turmeric. [cite web

At a recent show spice growers from Peermade displayed samples of organically grown spices like cardamom, black pepper, white pepper, nutmeg, mace, cloves, turmeric, ginger, vanilla beans, vanilla powder and herbal spices like oregano, sage, thyme and rosemary.
