IAAF World Road Running Championships

IAAF World Road Running Championships

The IAAF World Road Running Championships was a world championship running competition from the IAAF. There was one men's race and one women's race, both run over the distance of 20 kilometres in the 2006 event, and half marathon distance in 2007. This championship replaced the World Half Marathon Championships in the international athletics calendar.

As the name suggests, this event was run on public roads which were closed to traffic for the duration of the races. The inaugural World Road Running Championships were held in Debrecen, Hungary on 8th October 2006, with the 2007 event being held in Udine, Italy.

This competition should not to be confused with the IAAF World Women's Road Race Championships which were run from 1983 to 1991, or the IAAF World Road Relay Championships which took place between 1992 and 1998.

On 29 November 2007, the IAAF announced that the name of the IAAF World Road Running Championships would revert back to its original title of the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships, beginning with the 2008 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 12 October 2008.
