History

Cheltenham station opened on 19 December 1881.[1] There was once a siding on the eastern side of the station at the Melbourne end.[2] The signal box is inside the station building, and was installed in 1972, and enables trains to terminate in platform 1.[3] It was upgraded to a Premium Station on 8 March 1996.[4]

On 10 May 2008 Australian actress and singer Jessica Jacobs tripped and fell onto the tracks on Platform 2, and was subsequently struck by a train and died instantly from her injuries. As a result of the accident, buses replaced all trains on the Frankston Line for the rest of the day, an indefinite deferred service interruption.[5]

Cheltenham railway station plays a key part in the Cheltenham Major Activity Centre. The station will be the subject of large future developments, including a new station forecourt, with a terraced plaza (to address the heritage listed buildings at the station) and a new taxi rank, similar to that at Mentone railway station.[6]
