Altona is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located in the suburb of Altona, on the Werribee railway line. Altona is unmanned and is in Metcard Zones 1+2 overlap.

Facilities

Altona is located at the western end of the Pier Street level crossing, with station access from Pier Street and Railway Street South.

The station consists of one side platform, with a large brick building with an enclosed waiting room at the Flinders Street end of the station. A large Metcard machine is located at the entrance to the platform, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins.

History

The railway to Altona was opened in 1888, but to a station slightly to the east named Altona Beach. The line was privately owned, with the Victorian Railways taking operations in 1917 and opening the present station on December 1, 1917 as "Altona Beach". The VR took control of the line and station on October 1, 1924, and the station was later renamed to "Altona" in 1938. A loop siding existed beside the platform for a number of years, and a siding once extended west towards the site of Westona station, serving a coal mine. The passenger service was not extended to Westona until January 1985, then to Laverton in April the same year.
