Heidelberg is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located in the suburb of Heidelberg on the Hurstbridge railway line. Heidelberg is classed as a Premium Station and is in Metcard Zones 1+2.

Facilities

Heidelberg station is located between Studley Road and Mount Street, with station access via an underpass which connects the two. The Austin Hospital is located at the front of the station, on Studley Road.

The station consists of two platforms, in an island format, with a large red brick building in the centre, with an enclosed waiting room, a ticket office and toilets. A large and small Metcard ticket machine is located inside the waiting room, able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins.

Between Heidelberg and Rosanna station the line is single track, and passes under a hill by a short tunnel.

History

Heidelberg station opened on May 8 1888. It was once the terminating station on what is now the Hurstbridge line. It was upgraded to Premium Station status on June 21 1996, although the enclosed waiting area and ticket facilities were built in 1992 as part of the 'Travel Safe' program in the early 1990s.cite journal

At one time there were stabling tracks (Heidelberg used to be an infrequent suburban terminus) and a goods shed - most of the stabling tracks made way for an extension of the commuter car park, but the goods shed still exists. Later on there were three tracks running through the station - two serviced the island platform and the third track was the last surviving stabling track. The third track was removed after a period of inactivity. When the signals were upgraded to a totally electronic system one of the old mechanical signals was relocated to the side of the station where the third track used to be with a plaque on the platform explaining its historical significance.
