History

Bell station opened on October 8, 1889 as "Preston - Bell Street". It was renamed "Bell" in 1905. The station has the only monosyllabic name in the entire Melbourne suburban rail system (depending upon how one says Jewell).

In 1999 an arson attack on the Flinders Street side of the station (platform 1) resulted in significant damage to the historic station building. The building was repaired.

Bell was upgraded to Premium Station status on August 25, 2008. [cite web
