"Cry" is a song released by the British music duo Godley & Creme in 1985. It was included on the duo's album The History Mix Volume 1.

The song peaked at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming Godley & Creme's lone Top 40 hit in the US apart from their former band, 10cc. It also reached #19 on the UK Singles Chart.

The duo also directed the song's music video, which featured faces blended into each other using analog cross-fading,[1], it has a visual similarity to an earlier video by the Australian group The Reels "Shout & Deliver" (1981), both anticipate the digital effect of morphing used in a very similar way in Michael Jackson's 1991 video, "Black or White".

Cover versions

  • The song was covered by Australian singer Lisa Edwards in 1992, becoming a Top 5 hit on the ARIA Charts. This version had a different structure to the original version.
  • The Canadian band The Philosopher Kings covered the song on their 1997 album Famous, Rich and Beautiful.
  • The song was covered by Belgian band Hooverphonic on tour in 2007 and was later reworked and released as a b-side for their single "Circles" in 2008.
  • The song was covered by American band GAYNGS on their 2010 album Relayted. The accompanying video is a direct homage to the original video, and features a cameo by Kevin Godley.

Appearances in popular culture

  • The song was used by the television show Miami Vice in the episode "Definitely Miami" (1986), which featured the French actress Arielle Dombasle and American rocker Ted Nugent.
  • The music video for "Cry" was shown in an episode of MTV's Beavis and Butt-head.
  • The Flight of the Conchords' "I'm Not Crying" is a direct descendent of the single, with the analog fading effect being used in the TV version of the song.
  • The song appeared on South African TV sports when Cricket highlights were being shown of an international series that SA won - obviously 'Cry' being what the losing team felt like doing.
  • It appeared in Grand Theft Auto IV on Liberty Rock Radio.
