2006 ICC Champions Trophy qualifying round

The 2006 ICC Champions Trophy qualifying round was held as part of the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy, with a four-team round robin system of matches between 7 October and 14 October in the Indian cities of Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Mohali and Mumbai. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and West Indies competed for two spots in the main round of the Champions Trophy. West Indies and Sri Lanka qualified for the main round after winning their first two matches, and Bangladesh finished third after beating Zimbabwe by 101 runs in the final game.

Upul Tharanga batted through 42 of the 50 allotted overs, making his fifth One-day International hundred in his 30th ODI, which was enough to make him Man of the Match after Sri Lanka scored 302 for eight and beat Bangladesh by 37 runs. The top six all made above 20, but only Tharanga converted it past 50. Bangladesh' two main spin bowlers, Abdur Razzak and Mohammad Rafique delivered 20 overs for 76 runs, and were the two most economical, while the two overs of slow left arm bowling from Shakib Al Hasan cost 23 runs. In reply Bangladesh batted well under the lights, with Shakib Al Hasan scoring 67 from 108 balls, which was backed up with 34 from Farhad Reza and 33 from Aftab Ahmed. However ,three wickets from Farveez Maharoof and two wickets from Chaminda Vaas helped Sri Lanka to victory.

2nd Qualifying Match: West Indies v Zimbabwe (8 October)
