Location of the dragon with its destroyed remains

The Merritt Island Dragon (at Dragon Point) was a dragon-shaped green cement structure that stood at the southern tip of Merritt Island where the Indian River Lagoon splits to form the Banana River Lagoon. The dragon was built circa 1971 by Florida artist Louis Van DerCar and property owner Aynn Christal. This creature was created from 20 short tons (18 t) of cement and steel, and stood 35 feet (11 m) high and 65 feet (20 m) long.[1] Guarding the lagoon from her perch on Dragon Point, "Annie" was a landmark for both locals and boaters. It served primarily as a playhouse for children.

In August 2002 the Dragon was badly damaged, and partially collapsed into the water. The owner and the Brevard County Commissioners were unable to agree on a rehabilitation effort.
